Got a classic speaker or treble kicking around your basement or closet, unused and unwanted (unloved) because it’s blown out ? Replacing these speakers can be very expensive with costs upwards of several hundred dollars. Well don’t chuck’em out so quickly as many can be brought back to life through the wizardry of speaker rebuilding and re-coning for much less than you’d pay to replace the same speaker. In re-coning a speaker, the current cone is identified and spec’ed and a cone kit is purchased which is either an exact OEM replacement or facsimile. The old cone is removed, and the speaker frame and voice coil gap are cleaned. The new cone kit is installed and tested and you’re good to go. In some cases a partial rebuild can be done where only the surround (the part, made of paper, cloth, rubber, or foam, which connects the cone to the rim of the speaker basket) is removed and replaced. This is typically done for speakers where the surround, made of rubber or foam (think home stereo speakers), is rotted but the main cone is intact and is in good shape.

In some cases older “new old stock” cone kits can be acquired and used to rebuild a speaker. If the cone kit has been kept in a “cone friendly” environment then it can be used. In a lot of cases these old cones, although they’ve never been put into service, rot because of high moisture conditions; in these cases it’s best to go with an OEM replacement. Replacement cone kits can be found for most speaker baskets produced by the top speaker manufacturers including (but not limited to): JBL, Altec, EV, Jensen, Celestion, Eminence et al.

For treble and midrange drivers, voice coil diaphragm assemblies can be purchased for most driver assemblies produced by the top speaker manufacturers including (but not limited to): JBL, Altec, EV, Jensen, Celestion, Eminence et al.

Give us a call and we can discuss re-cone options and bring that old speaker back to life. Since the materials as well as speaker sizes vary, so to will the repair cost. I can give you can accurate estimate once I know what type of speaker you wish to be repaired.
